G. S. C. Scott
McGregor papers of last week reported the death of this once widely known merchant. He was born at Arkansas Post, Ark., in 1820, and died March 7th, 1903, in his 83d year.Mr. Scott came to McGregor in 1856, and at once engaged in business, mainly in crockery and glassware at wholesale. He was chairman of a committee that in 1857 prepared the articles of incorporation for McGregor; J. H. Merrill and John T. Stoneman were his colleagues. In 1857 he was chairman of the building committee that erected the McGregor Methodist church; and in the same year he with five others united in organizing Bezer Lodge, No. 135, A. F. & A. M. The Times in speaking of his character and habits, says of him:
The spirit of his presence in church and lodge cast an atmosphere of Intuitive moral uplift. He was a man who not only omitted those things which he felt to be harmful to himself or to others, but his constant thought and aim in life was to search out those things which would make his brother men the better. A Godly man has received his reward.
