Garnavillo- Leo "Dick" Bangs, 67, of Garnavillo, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, in the Guttenberg Care Center after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, by the Rev. Harold McMillin. Burial: Garnavillo Community Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Garnavillo.

Those who will miss him include his wife, Peg; his mother, Hope; two daughters, Barb (Jeff) Patten of Johnston and Tracy Kjar of Kansas City, MO.; a son, Jeff (Cindy) Moser of Bartlesville, Okla.; two sisters, JoAnn (Gary) Huston of Tempe, Ariz., and Judy (Lee) Sinkhorn of King City, MO.; a brother, Bill Bangs of Spencer; and four grandchildren, Brian Moser, Trevor Moser, Greg Patten and Phillip Patten.

He was preceded in death by his father; two sisters, Mary in infancy and Jackie Butt; and a brother, Jim Bangs.

Dick, the son of Leo and Hope (Stambrough) Bangs, was born Jan. 3, 1937, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He graduated from Farragut High School in Iowa and Northwest Missouri College, Maryville, MO., where he received a degree in education and played basketball for four years. He served his country in the United States Army Reserves.

Dick taught industrial arts and driver ed for 38 years, retiring in 1997 - one year at Council Bluffs, two years at Mondale, one year at West Harrison and 34 years at Garnavillo Community School. Bangs also coached girls basketball there for 34 years and earned three state appearances, 1973, 1987, 1988, with only one losing season; He was named one of the winningest coaches in Iowa girls history. He was named Conference Coach of the Year several times and had a record of 479 wins, 277 losses.

On Aug. 8, 1968, Dick was united in marriage with Peg Welsh at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Dick enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, traveling, spending time with family and friends and driving tour busses for Tristate Tours. Dick was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo.
