Death of an Esteemed Lady
Ere this the news will hve reached every part of Clayton County that mrs. Elijah Odell is no more. She expired at her home in McGregor last week and was buried in the Elkader cemetery on Sunday last. A large number of friends from McGregor and Garnavillo and nearly every one from Elkader who knew her, followed her remains to the grave.
It was a painful scene. There stood the strong man bathed in tears and overcome with anguish who for twenty years and perhaps more had experienced none but reciprocal love from her who was being returned to the earth. A deep affliction! An irreparable loss! One of the nobliest, best of women has he lost; an affectionate and devoted wife, an accomplished and intelligent member of society. Beloved and respected by all, her loss is more keenly felt.
There too at the grave, stood her son whose footsteps in his infancy and boyhood she had guided into that path which will lead him anon to honor, influence and wealth.
Her brother and sister too -- Thos. Updegraff, Esq. and Mrs. W.D. Crooke - were there to mourn the loss of another of their kindred. To them too, the loss will be great, the grief unbounded.
The universal sympathy extended to the mourners may assuage their sorrow for a time but it cannot restore the object of their love. Well may they mourn.
