Elkader Register, Fri., 17 Feb. 1882.
Died- At his home in National, on Feb. 13th, 1882, of hemorrhage of the kidneys, Mr. Alfred Smith, in the 60th year of his age.
Deceased was born in Essex county, New York, July 2d, 1821, where he resided until 1850, when he removed to Clayton county, and settled in Farmersburg township, where he continued to reside until the time of his death.
For over thirty years he has been a resident of Clayton county, and has a large circle of acquaintances and friends, but as far as can be learned, he had no enemies. Always honest and upright in his dealings with all men, and leading a Christian life under the golden rule of "Do unto others, as ye would that they should do unto you," he won the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact.
By his death he leaves a wife, one child and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a kind husband, father and neighbor. His funeral occurred on Tuesday, and was conducted by the Masonic lodge, of which order he was an honored and respected member. May he rest in peace.
