Elkader Register, Fri., 20 May 1881.

From the Press we learn the particulars of the suicide by hanging of Hiram Cole, a respected citizen of this county, living about four miles southwest of Strawberry Point. The sad affair occurred on Sunday last. A little son going into the cow stable in the afternoon, saw his father suspended from the roof, with a rope about his neck. Mr. Cole's feet was on the ground, and it appears that he deliberately choked himself to death. Mr. Cole has at times shown signs of mental derangement, and but a few months since attempted to take his life by poison. The funeral occurred at County Corners on Monday.
