Elkader Register, Fri., 12 Aug. 1881. McGregor Local column.
While peddling vegetables on our street Tuesday evening, Mr. D. C. Vansickle, who lives near Elkader, was killed by a runaway team. A peddler's wagon came out of B. Street at full speed and struck the old man's high-box, spring rig, keeling it over. Unfortunately he was in it, and as the wagon overturned, fell out, striking on a rock, cutting the back of his head. He was picked up insensible and carried into Brooks & Water's carpenter shop, where he lived but 3 hours. Mr. Vansickle was one of the old residents of this county, an honest, industrious man, respected by all who knew him. His death will prove a heavy blow to his family.
