Elkader Register, Thur., 21 July 1898.
Our Clayton correspondent gives us the particulars of the drowning at that place on Wednesday afternoon, of August Reinke. He with others were bathing off the sand bar opposite of town, and he made one plunge with his clothes on into about thirty feet of water, when he sank to rise no more. Steve Plake, who was with him first discovered that he had gone down without a cry by finding the drowned man's hat floating several yards from him. He then gave the alarm which was immediately answered by several men with drags, grappling hooks and other appliances to raise the body. The work was continued but at 2 o'clock today the body had not been recovered. He was a son of Mrs. Frank Berghahn, of Boardman twp., and his sister is in the employ of Mrs. A. C. Hagensick. Besides he leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.
