Pfc. Francis C. Smith, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ray Smith, was reported killed in action in Germany, Sept 19. Word of his death was received from the War department by his sister, Margaret Smith.
Private Smith was born Nov. 3, 1921 and lived with his parents on a farm near Garber until their death in 1939. He attended the Colesburg and Guttenberg schools. From 1939 on, he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Walters of Garber until he volunteered for service in the army June 27, 1941.
He received his basic training at Camp Polk, La., and then was transferred to Rice, Calif., for desert training. From there he was moved to Camp Pickett, Va., for a short time and was then stationed at Indiantown Gap, Pa., from where he had his last furlough in July of 1943.
He was shipped overseas to England the following month and from there went into France and his last letter home was written somewhere in Belgium, Sept 11.
Private Smith was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by five sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Vincent Combs, Garber; Betty Lou, Dubuque; Mary Jean and Donna Mae, Elkader; Margaret, Davenport; Sgt. Lloyd, Fort Bliss, Texas; Keith Smith, Earlville; Asa Smith, Greeley.
