Elkader Argus, Thur., 17 June 1897.

Monday evening as James Jewett, a young man about 22 years of age, was crossing the railroad track with a team and wagon near the depot at Strawberry Point, the south bound passenger train struck the wagon demolishing it and instantly killing young Jewett, severing his body in twain on the track. Others who were with him in the wagon at the time, saved their lives by jumping. Martin Marquad, one of the number had his arm badly cut and broken.

Killed by the Cars.
Strawberry Point, June 14.—A terrible accident occured at this place at 5:30 this afternoon. James Jewett and Martin Marquad, who work for Miles Alderson, were returning from work and attempted to cross the railroad track in front of the passenger train going south. The horses became un­manageable and ran into the side of the incoming engine and were thrown to ono side. Jewett who was driving, was thrown under the wheels between the tank and trucks and cut in two. Marquad, who was leading a team behind the wagon was thrown and struck on the platform on his back, breaking his left arm near the elbow and was otherwise bruised up. The wagon was demolish­ed, but the horses were not seriously injured.
