Mrs. S. Hamlett Buried Sunday
" A Long Time Citizen of Clayton County Passed Away Thursday, December 9th, In Kansas City"The funeral of Mrs. Susan Hamlett was held at the Congregational Church in this place (Edgewood) Sunday morning at eleven o'clock, December 12, 1915, her death having occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Addie Hamlin, in Kansas City, Missouri, early Thursday morning, December 9th. Rev. Heiserman, pastor of the Methodist Church, preached the sermon, the music for the occasion being furnished by the male quartette from Wood. The remains were followed by a large circle of friends and relatives to their resting place in Edgewood cemetery where internment took place.
Miss Susan Knickerbocker was born in Potter County, Pennsylvania, February 10. 1859, where she lived until 5 years of age, when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amason Knockerbocker, came to Iowa, locating north of Wood.
On the 24th of October, 1876, she was married to Elias Hamlett, and in '86 they moved to Nebraska where they remained six months, returning at the end of that time to Wood where they lived until 1894.
Mr. and Mrs. Hamlett, in company with Mrs. Mary Smock, and Art and Ed Cleveland, made an overland trip with teams to West Virginia in 1894 where they stayed one year and then moved to Putnam County Missouri. After seven years spent in Missouri, the deceased and husband came back to Iowa and bought the old home, near Wood where they lived until 1902.
During the past few years Mrs. Hamlett has been living at Olathe, Kansas. Most of the past summer she has spent with relatives in and around this place, returning to her home in Kansas City only about two weeks prior to her death, which was caused from a complication of heart trouble, asthma and a hard cold.
She leaves to mourn her death one daughter, Mrs. Addie Hamlin of Kansas City, MO., and four sons, Luther E. of Knox, Illinois; Arthur E. of Olathe, Kansas; Oscar E and Earnest A. of Kansas City; and four grandchildren; also three sisters, Mrs. Diana Ashline, Mrs. Roaina Fisher and Mrs. Hannah Shaw, of this place; one uncle and aunt, and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Mrs Hamlett joined the Baptist church in early life and in later years transferred her membership to the United Brethern Church, retaining her connection with the last named church until her death. She was a kind hearted, patient and devoted mother, companion and friend and will be greatly missed by all who have known her for so many years.
