Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Feb. 1920.
Three deaths in one family in less than a week's time - mother, son and daughter. Thus is written the sad history of the John Fritz family of Giard township.
Caroline Marie Fritz, nee Reimer, was born on March 29th, 1879, in Volga township, Clayton county, where she grew to womanhood. She attended school and was confirmed at Garnavillo on March 25th, 1891. On November 22, 1904, she was united in marriage to John Fritz at Garnavillo and to this union were born five children: Oscar, Marie, Lester, Lina and Dorothy.
A short time ago deceased was taken ill and after a brief illness she passed away at their home in Giard Township Wednesday, Feb. 4th.
Mrs. Fritz was a loving wife and a kind mother and will be sorely missed by her husband and remaining three children.
Thursday, Feb. 5th, the oldest daughter, Marie, was summoned by death, a victim of pneumonia. She was born in Giard township on Oct. 5, 1907 and died at her present home at the age of twelve years and four months. She contracted pneumonia and death came without much warning. She was buried with her mother on Feb. 6th at the Giard cemetery beside her mother.
The messenger of death, Tuesday, again visited this sad home and this time the oldest son, Oscar, aged fourteen, was the victim.
Oscar had been a student in the Elkader high school and two weeks ago Tuesday he went to his home in Giard township because he had taken ill. He also contracted pneumonia and on last Tuesday answered the final summons. He was laid beside his mother and sister in the Giard cemetery yesterday afternoon.
It is impossible to express in words the sorrow that has come to this one home and the deeply bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of all.
Those left to mourn the departure of these three are the father, John Fritz, and three children, Lester, Lina and Dorothy, besides numerous other relatives.
The memorial services will be held at the Giard M.E. church as soon as the family is able to be out and notice will be given the relatives.
