Mrs. Caroline Bothmer, nee Loescher, was born in 1832, at Amt-Eckbuta, Hanover, Germany. At the age of 16 she came to America, making her home with her sister at Berlin, Pa. Here, in 1851, she was united in marriage to Henry F. W. Bothmer, who preceded her in death in September, 1893. In 1857 the family moved west, locating at Strawberry Point. They remained here about two years and then took up their abode at Clayton, which place has since been their home. Seven children were born to this union of whom six survive: Mrs. J. M. Seippel, of Julian, Ia.; Mrs. C. E. Hinsch, of Farmersburg; Mrs. Julius Ponsor, of Lewiston, Mich.; Mrs. Chas. Dittmer, of Garnavillo; Henry, of Clayton; and C. W., of Dubuque, Mrs. Fred Gossman, having preceded her in death on July 5, 1908. Deceased had been ailing for some time and on Sunday night, Jan 22nd, she passed away. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Braun, of this place, were held at Clayton, Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 25th, with interment in the Clayton Cemetery.
