Clayton County Register, 13 July 1938.

Harvey Alpheus Kane, the son of George Kane and his wife Harriet Adams, was born February 18, 1875, in Garden Plain, Ill.

As a youth and young man, Mr. Kane lived with his parents, receiving his education at Garden Plain, and Morrison, Ill., and for some time attending college at Wheaton, Ill.

In September, 1903, he was united in marriage to Carrie Sark of Thorpe, Iowa, which then was also his residence. To this union were born seven children, Florence, Ruby, Pearl, Everett, Harvey, Anna and Allen.

Mr. Kane lived for two years in a lumber camp in Wisconsin, then returned to Iowa, living at Littleport on a farm, at Edgewood in a restaurant for about four years. At Edgewood he took the rural mail carrier's examination, and moving to St. Olaf became rural mail carrier. Here he served for about 19 years, and for the past four years served as rural mail carrier out of Farmersburg. It became necessary for him to discontinue his work in March of this year.

The married life of Mr. Kane was filled with sadness early. His wife and two children were taken from him during the flu epidemic of 1919, and Pearl died in infancy. This left him without a wife to stand by his side in the rearing of his family. He now had to be both father and mother to his family and carry on alone. And certainly the children have paid him the tribute of being both father and mother to them. Their loving care and service during his illness has borne witness to their regard for their father.

For the past three years Mr. Kane has been ailing, and though many times in physical suffering, he continued faithfully in his work, still having at heart the welfare of his family. Death finally took him on the morning of July 4th, at 8:45. Death was caused by cancer.

He reached the age of 63 years, four months and 18 days.

He leaves to mourn, his children, Florence, Harvey, Anna and Allen. Also his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pope, of Manchester; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Sark. Also other relatives and friends. One sister has preceded him in death.
