Mrs. Martha Beals, the subject of this sketch was born at Scranton, Penn., on December 18th, 1840. She came of hardy pioneer stock and spent her early girlhood years amidst the rough environment which characterized the life of those early days. Moving to Clermont, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Mr. William A. Beals in the year 1857. To this union were born four children, two of whom preceded their mother in death, George Melvin, who died in infancy, and Mrs. George Cook of Arriba, Colo.
In 1872 they moved to Farmersburg, Iowa, where they lived until 1915 when the husband passed away and since that time she has been making her home with her daughter Mrs. H. O. Perkins of Oelwein, Iowa. She leaves to mourn her death two daughters, Mrs. Chas. Knudson of Montevideo, Minn., and Mrs. H. O. Perkins of Oelwwein, Iowa. also one brother, Jonas Learn of West Union, Ia., and two sisters, Mrs. Chas. Anderson of Clermont, Iowa, and Mrs. Alice Bellis of Duluth, Minn.
She was a member of the Methodist church of Waukon, Iowa.
The services were conducted by Rev. Morrow of Monona and the remains were laid to rest in the Farmersburg cemetery.
