Elkader Weekly Register, April 4, 1889
Death has made another visitation to one of the happy homes in the county and removed a loved one. This time the relentless destroyer has struck down a young man, just entering into manhood, and on the threshhold of what promised to be a career of usefulness.
The victim was Matthew Feeney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Feeney, of Highland township; aged nineteen years, three months and eighteen days.
His sickness was of short duration. Up to within ten days of his death he had been an attendant of the public schools of Elkader, but not feeling well he walked home. On Tuesday of last week he rode down to Volga to see a doctor, who told him he was suffering from kidney trouble, and on Thursday, March 28th, he breathed his last.
Deceased was born in Highland township on the farm where he died, December 9th, 1869. He was a quiet young man of many noble qualities of heart and mind, and was highly respected by all, and his death will be universally mourned among his numerous acquaintances here and in Highland township. The afflicted parents will have the sympathy of all in their great bereavement.
The funeral took place from the Catholic church, Elkader, on Saturday last, and was very largely attended. His remains are "sleeping the sleep that knows no wakening" in the Catholic cemetery.
