George Jacobs, Former Mayor, Dies Saturday
_______FORMER GUTTENBERG MAYOR DIES FOLLOWING STROKE; FUNERAL TUESDAY
_______George M. Jacobs, well known Guttenberg business man, passed away at his home at 11:20 a. m. Saturday. He suffered a stroke shortly after noon Thursday from which he rallied only slightly. Although in poor health for the past two years his death was not expected.
He was born in Guttenberg March 20, 1873, the son of G. H. and Elizabeth (Nolte) Jacobs. He spent his entire life in this community. Of late years he was engaged in a men’s furnishing business here.
He was united in marriage with Miss Lizzie Kickbusch who with the following children survive: Walter, Emma, Helen, George and Stanley of Guttenberg, and Mrs. D. J. McGuffin (Irene) of Cedar Rapids. Three children preceeded [sic] him in death. He also leaves to mourn his passing three sisters, Mrs. W. A. Stretch of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Clementine Eggerth of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Grant Bayman of Guttenberg, two brothers, Hugo of Dubuque and William of Hensdale, Mont.; also five grandchildren besides a host of friends.
A loyal Democrat, a lifelong student of politics, he never sought public office preferring rather to assist deserving men to office. His only public office was that of Mayor of Guttenberg during 1933 and 1934 when he was drafted by his friends to head a ticket which won by a majority of more than 3 to 1 over the opposition.
Frank, outspoken, sincere, his ready wit won him many friends. Truly of him may be said “They loved him best, who knew him best.” There is no death, the stars go down to rise upon some fairer shore; And bright in Heaven’s jeweled crown they shine forever more. And ever near us though unseen the dear immortal spirits tread. For all the boundless universe is life, there are no dead.
Funeral services were held at the family home Thursday afternoon, the Rev. D. D. Welch officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery.
The pallbearers were L. O. Hall, J. H. Kregel, I. N. Tindell, E. L. Charlesworth, J. G. Wiedmer and L. H. Beerman
