Died at the Hospital for the Insane, at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, on Wednesday, Oct. 26th, 1870, Jonathan Swan, in his 56th year.

The deceased was once a prominent, active farmer and business man of this County. All the old settlers remember him as a man of strict integrity and his lamentable end will be regretted by all.

Mr. Swan was taken to the Hospital in 1861, shortly after his reason had taken flight, and since then, he has known no sorrows or joy but protracted an automatic existence. He is better off now, and this should be a consolation to his bereaved family and friends.

Clayton County Journal: November 9, 1870

Notes:
Burial place is unknown & may be in the asylum cemetery if his body wasn't returned to Clayton co.

Jonathan Swan is enumerated on the 1852 & 1854 state census & 1860 U.S. census in Boardman twp.; and on the 1870 U.S. census as an inmate of the Insane Asylum in Mt. Pleasant, Henry co. IA. The latter census indicates he is age 50, insane & deaf. Birthplace is marked unknown. The 1860 census shows age 42, farmer, born VA, wife Christine.
