Gustave Edward Mentzel was born in Dresden, Saxony, Germany, May 22, 1836, the son of Charles and Johanna (Leonard) Mentzel, and died at the home of his daughter, Anna, near Osborne, Iowa, on March 16, 1923 at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 24 days.
Mr. Mentzel came to America in 1854 and was united in marriage to Eliza Dohrer on February 11, 1862. To this union five children were born, three boys and two girls, two of whom preceded him in death, Julius on May 20, 1885 and Richard Jan. 15, 1918. Mrs. Mentzel died very suddenly on May 28, 1915.
One son, Gustave of Elkader, and two daughters, Mollie of Wadena, and Anna on the home farm, besides nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive.
May he rest in Peace.
Funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon at eleven o'clock at the late home and at one o'clock in the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. C. H. Franke, with interment in the East Side cemetery.
