Friday morning, March 8th, 1891, occurred the death of Mrs. Lydia J. Ruff, at her home in Volga, aged 65 years. She was sick only two days, but had never been well since having la grippe last winter. The immediate cause of her death was congestion of the lungs.
She leaves her husband, one sister and several nephews and nieces to mourn the loss of a loved one.
The funeral was held Sunday in the M.E. church, Rev. H. Williams conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Whitford. The bereaved husband has the heartfelt sympathy of all in his sad affliction.
Card of Thanks
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the friends who were so kind and helpful during the illness, and since the death of my beloved wife.
Francis Ruff~Elkader Register, March 12, 1891 (Volga news column, March 10)
Notes:
>Although the obit says she died on a Friday, that is not correct. March 8, 1891 was a Sunday, not a Friday. Clayton County Death Records, Book I, pg 79 give her DOD as March 8, 1891, supporting the date (but not the day of week) given in her obit>Lydia Gould Cunningham was Francis Ruff's 2nd wife. She first married Richard M. Cunningham in 1859. He died in 1876.
She's buried in Hillcrest cemetery.
