Died in Boardman township, on July 20th, 1866, John Downie, Sr., aged 65.
The deceased was a native of Scotland, came to Canada at the age of 9 and in 1838 removed from there to Iowa, and in this county, since which time he has resided here.
Being one of the earliest settler he passed through all the perils, privations, and hardships of pioneer life. Among the old settlers as well as with those who came here at a later period, he bore the reputation of a good man and a useful citizen.
Being a Free Mason and a member of the Elkader Lodge, his remains were deposited in their last resting place in the true Masonic form. The funeral was largely attended, and many will be mourners be here and through the entire county, when they heard of the death of so good a man as John Downie.
We sympathize with the friends of the deceased, but he had lived to a ripe old age, his work had been well done, and the Great Grand Master of the Universe has called him home to his rewards, and we bid them consolation in this.
