Daniel W. Johnson was born at Ft. Wain (sic), Ind., July 1, 1844. He passed away on Friday, February 16, 1923, being 78 years, 7 months and 16 days of age.
At the age of five years he came with his parents from Indiana to Iowa. They settled down in Clayton County near Elkport.
He enlisted at Elkader, July 10th, 1862 in the Eighth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. Except for a period of 7 months, when he was confined to a hospital with typhoid fever, he was enabled to serve nobly and bravely until the end of the war, being discharged at Macon, Ga., Aug. 13, 1865. His Colonel was H.G. Barnes, and his First Lieutenant was Josiah J. Kleaver.
The greater part of his life was spent in this community and he was known as an upright and christian citizen. All of his relatives have preceded him to the great beyond, except his son-in-law, J.H. Latham.
The memory of Mr. Johnson will linger long in the minds of his many friends, because of his patriotism and loyalty to his country and the useful and generous life he lived as an example to all.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Presbyterian church, Rev. A.R. Smith officiating. Burial in Hill Crest cemetery.
