Saturday morning, May 6th, 1911, at 7 o’clock occurred the death of Mrs. Caroline Palas. She quite ill all winter and spring, and for some time, previous to her death, little hope for her recovery had been entertained. She was tenderly cared for by her daughters, who did all they could to relieve her suffering.
Caroline Marie Dorothea Voss was born February 19th, 1842 in Medow, Province of Pommern, Germany. In the year 1863 she came to America, settling with her parents at Garnavillo. June 11, 1864 she was united in marriage to Mr. John Palas. Twelve children blessed this union, two of which died in infancy. They resided on a farm in Farmersburg township until 1901, when they moved to this place.
In 1902 the death of her husband occurred. Mrs. Palas, at the time of her death, had reached the age of 69 years, 2 months and 17 days. She leaves to mourn her departure six sons, Henry and Fred of Luana; Herman and Ben, of Manitoba, Canada; Arthur of Des Moines, and Louis, of St. Olaf, also four daughters, Mrs. Louis Schultz, of Luana, Miss Louisa, of Bates, Manitoba, Canada, and Mrs. Fred Klinge and Mrs. Henry Klinge, both of this place. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Heiden and Mrs. Wirkler, of Clayton Center; thirty-three grandchildren and two stop sons, John Palas, of Postville, and Wm. Palas, of Canada.
The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church, Farmersburg, Wednesday, May 10th 1911, at 10 o’clock in the morning, Rev. E. Pett officiating. The remains were then taken to Clayton Center, where the burial took place, Rev. Burkhardt conducting the services there.
