On Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1884, the spirit of one of our oldest and most respected citizens passed from this earthly land of cares and woes, to its eternal home above, where all is happiness and bliss.

Uncle Tom, as he was familiarly called, was beloved and respected by all who knew him, and his sudden death cast a gloom of sorrow over the entire community. Although sick and confined to his bed but a few days, his feeble condition and old age foretold the result to be inevitable. Surrounded by his family and friends, he quietly sank into the sleep of a devout Christian.

Thomas Flaherty was born at Clifton, county Galway, Ireland, in the year of 1808. Removing to this country in 1848, he lived for a time in the states of Maine and New York, but like many others soon sought the western frontier, and in 1855 moved with his family to the spot near East Elkport, where he has since resided opening up from a forest a fine and fertile farm, by honest hard toil, but his labors were not in vain.

He leaves an aged wife and family of highly respected children to enjoy the blessings of the accumulations of his years of toil. His remains were conveyed form his home to his church of worship, flowed by a large concourse of mourners and friends, after services by Rev. Corbett, they were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at this place. Please be to his ashes!
