John Dempster died at the residence of his son John, in this township on Monday, July 21, 1884, at the age 82 years, 3 months and 10 days.

The deceased was born at Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, in 1802.

He was married to Margaret Templeon at Nether Mills, June 26th, 1829. They came to America in 1841 and settled in Michigan, where they lived until 1852, when they came to Iowa and located in Volga township and lived in this neighborhood until his death, which occurred at his son John’s where they have been making their home.

He was the father of thirteen children, of which nine only are still living. He has forty-five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was a faithful husband, a kind parent and a good neighbor; honored by all who knew him. The funeral took place at Taylorsville, Tuesday and was largely attended.
