Elkader, Ia. – Special: Funeral services for William Henry O’Brien, 72, life long resident of this community who died at his home August 21, were held from the Witt Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Paul Kitter, officiating. Burial was in the Volga Cemetery, Volga City.The deceased was born in Cox Creek Township on November 25, 1870. He was united in marriage to Alice Kohler and to this union two sons were born, Ronald who preceded his father in death and Hubert of Clewiston, Florida who survives him.
On March 27, 1935 he was united in marriage to Emma Miller.
Mr. O’Brien was one of the plant operators for the Central States Power and Light Company here for twenty-six years. On March 6, 1936 he retired because of poor health.
Mr. O’Brien started to work when the plant was owned by the Schmidt Bros. and Company, who built the first light plant here. He continued without interruption with the succeeding companies. For the past ten years he has had charge of the State Weather Station in this territory.
He was always active in community affairs and for the past twelve years has played the part of Santa Claus at Christmas time for the Commercial Club.Survivors are his wife, and son Hubert of Clewiston, Fla.: three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Meyer of Elkader, Mrs. Kate Quinn of Des Moines, and Miss Sarah O’Brien of New Orleans: three brothers, Frank O’Brien of Volga City, Arthur of Cedar Rapids, and John of Clewiston, Fla.; and three step-children, Mrs. Henry Shriver of San Antonio, Tex., Helen Miller of Elkader, and Gus Miller in the Army.
