Funeral services were held on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Lutheran church for August Hempeler, 81, died here on Sunday, February 1, 1948. Burial was made in the city cemetery.
Mr. Hempeler had been ill for about a month with heart trouble.
A lifelong resident of the community, Mr. Hempeler was born, February 8, 1866, in Garnavillo township, a son of August and Charlotte Juergemeier Hempeler.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Louisa Bunge of Bellevue, Iowa; two sons, August Jr., and Louis, both of Garnavillo; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was married on May 18, 1897 in Farmersburg township to Dorothea Mueller. The couple lived for several years on a farm and then moved to Garnavillo. Mr. Hempeler was a carpenter and operated a lumber yard which he sold to the Meuser Lumber Company in 1911. He built the first St. Peter church and was the last remaining charter member of that congregation. He was also one of the organizers of the Garnavillo Savings Bank.
