Iowa Deaths:

Elkader- Mrs. John G. Hempel, 88, died Sunday. Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at the family home.

Funeral services for Mrs. J. G. Hempel, a pioneer resident of Clayton county, were held from the family residence in Elkader at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. H. G. Kelly officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Mrs. Hempel died at her home in Elkader at 10:30 o'clock Sunday morning, Jan. 22, 1950. She had been in failing health for several years and had been confined to her bed since September. Death was due to the infirmities of old age.

Emma Matilda Bickel was born Dec. 09, 1861, in a log cabin on the old camp ground located between Giard and Beulah. When a small child she moved with her parents to Giard, where she attended grade school and later high school in McGregor.

On Feb. 01, 1887, she was married to John G. Hempel of Giard. They enjoyed 58 years of wedded life. Mr. Hempel preceded her in death Oct. 02, 1945.

They began housekeeping at McGregor. In 1890 they purchased the general store at Giard. In 1895 they moved to Elkader, which has been her home for the past 55 years with the exception of a few months each year spent in Des Moines while Mr. Hempel served as a state representative during the 40th, 41st and 42nd general assemblies. She was a member of the Congregational Christian church.

She is survived by two daughters, Miss Kathleen Hempel and Mrs. G. J. (Iowa) Graf, both of Elkader, one granddaughter, Mrs. Vaughn (Mary Elizabeth) Speer, Ames, and one grandson, David Michael Speer, together with one sister, Mrs. Ella B. Richards, McGregor.

Preceding her in death besides her husband was a daughter, Johneyette, in 1906; also two sisters, Mrs. C. B. (Kate) Kruetter, McGregor, and Mrs. C. J. (Mary) Neill, Giard.

Pallbearers were H. M. Wolf, Avron Oleson, Fred Ihlenfeldt, Milton Wolf, Jake Walz and E. C. Bandow.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Ella B. Richards, McGregor; D. F. Richards, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Earl Gruver and Bill Gruver, Waterloo; Earl Bickel, Cedar Rapids.
