Elkport, Ia, Nov. 1 - Relatives here have received word of the death of George Taft, prominent Garber, Okla., capitalist, who died in a hospital at Enid, Okla., on Friday without telling how he was fatally wounded near his home Wednesday night.
Mr. Taft was born in Elkport, and was a son of O.D. Taft and grandson of Martin Garber, who formerly was auditor of Clayton county, also senator from this district. He is survived by two sons, Richard and William, who attend Oklahoma State university; another son and daughter and Mrs. Taft, living at home.
Authorities are baffled, but discount a suicide theory. Taft rushed from his home earlier in the evvening in response to a telephone message from an unknown caller. He was shot above and below the heart and a third bullet penetrated his clothing.
Friends of the victim could advance no reason either for a self-inflicted wound or an assault by another person. Mr. Taft, a civic and political leader, has been active in business in Garfield county since before statehood.
