Monona- Mary Catherine Erbe, 87, of Monona, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon, after a brief illness.
Mary was born Feb. 2, 1921, in rural Monona, Iowa, to Michael and Mary (Kane) Geraghty. She attended St. Patrick Catholic School through the eighth grade and graduated from Monona High School.
Mary was united in marriage to George Erbe on Oct. 22, 1945, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona. Three children were born to this union. Mary helped George in their machine shop for many years and also cooked for the St. Patrick hot lunch program. She was a devout member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, where she was baptized and confirmed, received her first communion and confession and was married. Mary will always be remembered for her wonderful Irish sense of humor and love for her family.
Survivors include three children, Ron (Jane) Erbe, Marion, Connie (Jim) Leete, Farmersburg, and Dennis Erbe, Monona; three grandchildren, Vanessa (Wayne) Brehm, Gregory Erbe, Denise (Eddie) Shekleton; three great-grandchildren, Ian Patrick Brehm, Ethan Gabriel Brehm, Ty Edward Shekleton; and two sisters, Rose Dougherty, Farmersburg, and Mabel (Charles) Swift, Waukon.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, in 1996; and one brother, Vincent Geraghty.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. The Rev. Richard Gaul will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home of Monona, with a Scripture service at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 a.m. until Mass time at the church on Monday.
