Shirley Harriett SchlakeShirley Harriett Schlake, daughter of George and Christine (Borcherding) Kishman, was born August 31, 1914 near Farmersburg, Iowa. She was baptized November 1, 1914, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, by Rev. Theo Guetzlaff and confirmed on June 30, 1929, by Robert E. Ave Lallemant.
On June 28, 1939 she married Parmer Schlake at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, by Rev. H.M. Adix. They farmed near Garnavillo for 32 years, later moving to Garnavillo in 1971.
Shirley was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where she was very active. She sang in the choir, played the piano, taught Sunday School and for many years was a member of the A.L.C.W. where she held an office in the organization. She was a charter member of the Garnavillo Historical Society and was active in community service for many organizations. She was a good letter writer, writing to men in the service and to people that were ill.
Shirley died Saturday, May 11, 1985. Surviving Shirley are her husband, Parmer; daughter Mrs. Richard Lingwall of Coon Rapids; son Robert Schlake of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; and grandchildren, Nathan and Stephen Lingwall, Michaela and Jason Schlake; sister, Mrs. Earl (Irene) Corlett of Castalia; brother, Landry Kishman, Farmersburg; and Mrs. Dean (Eunice) Burnett of Las Vegas, Nevada; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
