At the family residence in Elkader at 5:30 o'clock Saturday morning, Nov. 12th, 1892, occurred the death of Rebecca Jones, wife of Levi Doty, after an illness of several weeks.
The subject of this sketch was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., Sept. 26, 1818, and in 1836 was married to Levi Doty.
They came west to Indiana and from thence to Delaware county, Iowa, in 1846. After moving to Dubuque county, then then came to Highland township, Clayton county, in 1853, she and her husband being among its first settlers, Mr. Doty being the first township assessor. Here they lived until about two months ago when they removed to Elkader.
To them have been born sixteen children, thirteen of whom are living.
At the age of fifteen years Mrs. Doty united with the Presbyterian church and later joined the United Brethren. All her troubles of ill health she bore with patience and Christian fortitude, and upon the approach of her demise said "It was all right, she was ready."
For 57 years she has been the faithful companion of him who now stricken with disease and old age is heavily burdened with grief at his loss and is only buoyed up by the thought that the separation will not be for long. To the children she has been a loving, kind parent that will be greatly mourned and missed. From her old neighbors she goes with the love and respect of all.
Six of the children, Mrs. C.E. Green, Mrs. Rebecca Yearous, Mrs. Phoebe Fox, Mrs. Lilla Wilson, Mrs. Sarah Page, Mrs. Laura Judy, and James Doty were enabled to be present at the funeral.
The funeral services took place at the M.E. church on Sunday last, Rev. R.C. Lusk delivered an excellent discourse, after which the remains were conveyed to the east side cemetery, followed by a large number of our citizens and friends of the family.
