In Memoriam.
William Johns was born in upper Canada, November 8, 1839, and died July 12, 1895, in Pitcher township, Cherokee county, Iowa, at 6 o'clock, p.m.He was married September 12, 1861 to Ellen Mathilda Welch at Elkader, Iowa. Ten children blessed this happy union, eight of whom are living, the three oldest being married. The children were present at the death.
His youngest brother, Samuel Johns, of Atkinson, Neb., and cousin Henry Johns of Cleghorn, Ia.; and brother-in-law, L. Kardin of Yankton, S.D., with a number of friends were at his bed when the death messenger came. His death was caused by rectal cancer, which had caused him severe suffering for the past two years, and death was the only relief.
He was respected as a brave soldier in our civil war, was a kind father and a devoted husband.
The funeral services were held at the Dunkard church, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Cole and the G.A.R. post of Cherokee, and the Baptists of Mt. Olive church. The many beautiful flowers contributed show how highly he was esteemed.
He was loved, oh, so dearly, but God knew best.
Card of Thanks
We desire to return thanks to the old soldiers and other friends who so willingly assisted us during the time of our great trial.
