Elkader- Otto N. Bankes, 79, died Tuesday morning at Central Community Hospital following a long illness. He founded the Big Spring Trout Hatchery in 1938, which is now known as the Iowa State Big Spring Trout Hatchery. He served as supervisor of the operation for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Robert of Union, Iowa; a sister, Lula Dahling of Elkader; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Peace United Church of Christ. Burial: Mederville Cemetery, rural Elkader. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at Witt's.
