Yesterday evening, June 3rd, another old settler and veteran of the Mexican war passed to his reward in the other land.
Mathias Joseph Brown was born in Pennsylvania, he came west in 1847, and at Frankville, in 1849, was married, where life's happy dream commenced. In 1850 they came to McGregor, where they have since resided, Mr. Brown following the avocaton of a mason.
Seven children were born to them, six of whom, three daughters and three sons, with the mother are to-day in deep affliction over the loss of the aged husband and father. One child, M.J. Jr., died in 1878.
Mr. Brown's age was 72 years. He was a member of the Masonic order of this place, under the auspices of which order his remains will be consigned to their last resting place.
Mr. Brown was a man highly respected in this community, one in whom there was unabated confidence. His illness has extended through a period of a couple of years, a sufferer indeed.
