Clayton County Register, 22 Feb. 1939.
Retired Monona Pastor Buried Last Thursday.
Albert Johan Gottlieb Daugs answered the final summons of his Master after a brief, severe illness on Tuesday afternoon of last week at the age of 67 years, one month and 14 days.
He was born in Stetin, Pommerania, Germany, December 20, 1871. Here he was baptized and renewed the baptismal vows at the Confirmation alter. After coming to America he, at the proper age, matriculated at Wartburg college, Waverly, of the old Iowa synod to prepare for the holy ministry. In June, 1894, he graduated from Wartburg seminary of Dubuque and was soon thereafter ordained to the Lutheran ministry at Johnson's Creek, Wisconsin. October 11 of the same year he was joined in marriage to Miss Helena Schumacker of Farmington, Wis. The union was blessed with ten children: Mrs. Gertrude Hass, Monona; Mrs. Paula Schneider, Elkader; Rev. Harold Daugs of Dubuque; Palmer and Fredrick of Monona; Gottfried of Denver, Colo.; Helene and Mrs. Theodors Montgomery of Monona; Mrs. Ruth Anderson of McGregor, and Mrs. Charlotte Melcher of Monona.
After holding a charge briefly at Neshkorn, Wis., he was pastor of a congregation at Preston, Iowa, for two years; Walters, Minn., 11 years; Glidden, Iowa, 1 year; Harmony, Minn., nine years; and St. Paul's church at Monona, 17 years, completing 40 years in the active ministry. In the spring of 1935 he resigned from this, his last pastorate, and, together with his wife and two daughters still at home, went into retirement to live with his son Palmer on a farm north of Monona, continuing his membership in the church he served for so many years.
He took an active interest in the affairs of the synod at large and held responsible positions in it from time to time.
He died in simple faith in his Redeemer and Master, Whom he had served faithfully and ably throughout his ministry.
His passing is mourned by his wife, his ten children, twenty grandchildren, his brethren in the ministry, and a host of former parishioners and friends.
May he rest in peace from his labors. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord -".
Funeral services were held from the home at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, and at 2:00 from his church. Class members and other brother pastors served as pallbearers. President H. L. Adix gave an address in the name of the district. There were 24 visiting pastors in attendance. The text of the funeral sermon was Psalm 31, 5. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery. A large number of memorial wreath gifts by the church societies, the Sunday school, and numerous individuals were offered as a lasting memorial for the Waverly orphans home and for the American Lutheran church.
