Elkader- Dorothy Costigan Oberfell, 84, died Friday morning, Oct. 15, 1999, in Prairie du Chien, Wis., of injuries suffered in an automobile/train accident. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, by the Rev. Paul Peters. Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 7 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home, where there will be a Scripture service at 5 p.m. Monday.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Oberfell, of Chicago; a sister, Betty Walch of Elkader; and a brother, J.C. Clark Costigan of Elkader.

Elkader- an 84 year-old Elkader woman en route to La Crosse, Wis., for a doctor visit was killed at a downtown Prairie du Chien railroad crossing Friday morning, when she drove through a lowered safety arm and her car was struck by a Burlington Northern freight train.

According to Prairie du Chien police, the bright sun around 8:30 a.m. may have prevented Dorothy Mae Oberfell from seeing the crossing bar at East Blackhawk Avenue.

Witnesses said the safety equipment was operating properly.
