Elkader, Ia. - Funeral services for William Schmidt, 79, who died at his home here Sunday night, were held at the Evangelical Church Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Paul Kitterer, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Clayton Center cemetery.

Mr. Schmidt spent most of his life farming in Clayton County, moving to Elkader about 10 years ago. Besides his widow, he is survivied by five daughters and five sons.

Funeral services were held last Wednesday for William Schmidt, at one-thirty at the late home and two o'clock in the Evangelical Frieden's church. Burial was made at Clayton Center, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

William Schmidt, a life-long resident of Clayton county, was born June 04, 1860, in Garnavillo township, and died at his home in Elkader, Feb. 19, 1939, at the age of 78 years, eight months and 15 days.

Mr. Schmidt had been in failing health for some time, but was not confined to his bed until a week before his death. Throughout his illness his wife and children did all possible to make it comfortable for him.

The deceased was united in marriage, Feb. 24, 1883, at Clayton Center, by the Rev. F. W. Seifert, to Minnie Lembke. Nine children were born to this union. Mrs. Fred Vogt, St. Olaf; Arno Schmidt, Monona; Ben and Charles of St. Olaf; Mrs. Lester Lenth, Castalia; Mrs. Lloyd Nelson and Lawrence Schmidt of Elkader; Mrs. Lester Karsner and Mrs. Earl Schuler, both of Chicago.

The deceased had the rare privilege of celebrating his fiftieth wedding anniversary in the year 1933.

The deceased farmed the greater part of his life, retiring about 25 years ago. In the year 1928 he made his home in Elkader, where he lived until his death.

He leaves to mourn his departure besides the afore-named children, his wife, 21 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
