Elkader-- Last rites for a 32 year-old Elkader drowning victim, James Garaghty, who died early Sunday, will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Rev Cletus Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The Elkader farmer, who had operated Garaghty Bros. farm six miles east of Elkader in partnership with his brother, John, drowned shortly after midnight Saturday in an accident near the dock at McGregor where passengers board a transfer boat to Indian Isle resort.
Mr. Garaghty and his companion, Patty Mahowald of Guttenberg, arrived at the dock to late to board the boat. The pilot threw a tow rope to Garaghty to help pull the boat back so the couple could get on it. While pulling on the rope it broke and the young man fell backwards into nine feet of water at the dock.
The body was recovered 55 minutes later by the McGregor fire department. In an inquest held Sunday morning at McGregor, the death was ruled accidental.
He was born on a farm near Elkader Oct. 8, 1922, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Garaghty.
Survivors include his brother, John, and half-brother, Lawrence, Minneapolis.
