Dennis E. Schmelzer, 69, of Tower Terrace Trailer Court, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital after a long illness.

Born April 2, 1918, at Farmersburg, he married Geraldine Buhman on Sept. 12, 1938, at Jesup. She died in 1975. He retired from farming in the Postville area in 1967, and moved to Cedar Rapids. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Keegan of Cedar Rapids; a son, David of Center Point; two brothers, Gerald of San Diego, Calif., and Eugene of Garnavillo; a sister, Lavonne Walter of Luana; and five grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, by the Rev. Joseph O'Brien. Burial: Garnavillo Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. A rosary will be held at 7 tonight at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may call today from 4 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. A memorial fund has been established.
