Elkader-- Raphael J. "Ray" Carolan, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in Central Community Hospital after a long illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, by the Rev. Paul Peters. Burial: church cemetery. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. today and 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, where a Scripture service begins at 5 p.m. today.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Gertrude Willson Carolan; two sons, David and wife LaRae of Elkader and Douglas and wife Lois of Overland Park, Kan.: two daughters, Vicki Mayer and husband Howard of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Janice Hamilton and husband Robert of Barrington, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Born Nov. 7, 1911, in rural Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Thomas and Margaret Donlon Carolan, he graduated from Decorah High School in 1930. Ray operated the D-X Sunray Oil Co., Elkader, for 50 years. He was active in the community and had served on the Elkader town council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Keystone Barbershop Chorus, St. Joseph's Church Choir and Elkader Golf and Country Club.
