Carl Wayne Lewis, 84, died Friday July 23, 1999, in St. Luke's Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Edgewood Bible Church, Edgewood. Burial: Strawberry Point Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Roberson Funeral Home, Strawberry Point.

Carl was born Jan. 8, 1915, in Edgewood, Iowa, to George M. and Blanche Brady Lewis. He attended school in Wood Center and Edgewood High School. In 1935 he went to Oregon and California where he worked in the fruit drying industry. In 1936 he and a friend traveled and worked their way through 35 states, and into Canada and Mexico.

Carl met Marvel Alderson in 1937 and on June 13, 1938 married her in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They went immediately to the west coast to live at Tulare and Red Bluff, Calif. Their son, Gary, was born while at Tulare. They next moved to Canby, Ore., where Carl worked at Canby Feed and Seed Warehouse. During WWII Carl worked in the Portland, Ore., Navy Shipyard. After the war he worked construction, and before retiring, worked at United Grocers in Milwaukie, Ore. In 1984, Carl and Marvel returned to Strawberry Point to live.

Carl was a member of Gladstone Christian Church, Gladstone, Ore., attended First Congregational Church in Edgewood, and joined United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gary: a sister, Vera Hancher; and a brother, Ray.

Carl leaves his wife; sisters-in-law, Marcella Fenton of Strawberry Point and Evelyn Lewis of Salem, Ore.; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
