Postville Review, Sat., 17 Aug. 1895.
We clip the following from the Luana correspondence of the McGregor News. It is a sad accident, and proves the danger of allowing women or children to drive along a railroad track:
"Mrs. Mary Backhaus, of near this place, drove to Monona on Monday with her children, and while returning towards evening they met an east bound train at Melvin Davis' residence. They undertook to turn into the yard for safety, but the horses took fright and ran away, throwing all out of the buggy, the children escaping injury, but Mrs. B. was severely hurt. She was carried into Mr. Davis' residence in an unconscious condition. In the meantime a brakeman carried the news to Monona, and Dr. Renshaw was summond. He came immediately and has stayed with her, doing all that medical skill could for the unfortunate woman. At this writing, Tuesday, she is still unconscious, with a slim chance for recovery. Since writing the above Mrs. Backhaus has ddied. Funeral at one o'clock Friday from residence."
