Funeral services were held here last Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Henry Bente, at 1:30, at the late home and at 2:00 at the Friedens Evangelical church. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
Mrs. Henry Bente, born Ida Sophie Dorothy Miller, was a daughter of Fred Miller and his wife Dorothy, nee Ortman. She was born in Griebow, Germany, on the 15th day of March, 1870, and died Thursday, Jan. 26, 1939, at her home in Elkader, reaching the age of 68 years, ten months and eleven days.
The deceased came to America with her parents when she was three years of age. Her parents settled in Boardman township, and Mrs. Bente has lived in this community ever since.
The deceased was united in marriage to Henry Bente, September 19, 1899, in Cox Creek township. Four children were born to this union, and all survive her. Mrs. Margaret Schulte of St. Olaf, Iowa, Fred and Harry of Elkader, and Mrs. Lawrence Dorothy Wilke of Elkader. Her husband preceded her in death on March 22, 1935. Her father and mother died in the year of 1913 and 1916, respectively. Only one member of her family survives, namely; Mrs. Agnes Lindeman, of Elkader.
Mrs. Bente spent the greater part of her life on the farm. About seventeen years ago they came to town. Mrs. Bente enjoyed average health for a woman of her age, until about ten days ago, when she became seriously ill. All that her loved ones could do for her was done, but God willed otherwise.
Mrs. Bente was a faithful and loving mother. Her husband was called upon to suffer many years, and during all that time she cared for him faithfully.
The deceased was a member of Friedens Evangelical church and its Frauen Verein, and attended both regularly. She leaves to mourn her departure, besides the aforenamed children and sister, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
