Claton County Register, 01 Feb. 1939.
The body of Gideon M. Gifford was brought here last week Monday for burial in the East Side cemetery on the Gifford lot.
Mr. Gifford died in St. Paul on Friday, January 20th, following an illness of about two months. He was born here in this county on May 14, 1850, and at the time of his death had reached the age of 88 years, five months and six days.
The deceased was the son of the Rev. Henry and Lucetta (Hill) Gifford, some of this county's earliest pioneers. Elkader was his home the greater part of his life. As a young man he worked on the narrow gauge railroad that served this community and from that time until age retarded his activity he was an active resident of Elkader.
For a period of years he served Elkader as its postmaster and later was employed in the old First National Bank. He remained a resident of Elkader until the year 1919 when he and his wife removed to St. Paul, to be near two of their children.
November 25, 1880, he was united in marriage with Fredricka Packer at Beulah. She preceded him in death in the year 1931. His father died in 1881 and his mother in 1887. He is survived by two sons and one daughter; E. J. Gifford, 1824 Stanford Ave., St. Paul; Kit C. Gifford, Kennewick, Wash.; and Mrs. Ernest R. Smith, 1670 Jefferson Ave., St. Paul.
Funeral services were held in St. Paul, Sunday, Jan. 22, and the body was brought here the following day for burial in the local cemetery, the Rev. N. O. Bartholomew officiating at the grave.
In spite of the fact that Mr. Gifford left Elkader 20 years ago, he still had a host of friends among both the younger as well as the older residents. Annually, as long as health would permit, he would return to Elkader to visit with these friends, and they will miss these pleasant but all-to-short visits.
