A death that was startling in its suddenness and sad in its circumstances was that of Mrs. C.W. Bateman, who, before many people heard of her illness, died Thursday about noon, following a three days' illness form peritonitis. Burial was made Sunday at her former home at Elkport.
Mr. Bateman had been ill for several weeks and the strain of caring for him had evidently weakened her constitution. One sister, Miss Anna Lundt was here and had been helping her care for Mr. Bateman; another, Miss Lena, arrived from Elkport a few minutes before Mrs. Bateman died.
Mr. Bateman's parents were on their way here from Missouri for a visit, having been delayed by illness, but reached Elkport in time for the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Bateman, Sr., were coming to make the acquaintance of their daughter-in-law, whom they had never seen.
The body was taken Friday to Elkport, accompanied by her two sisters, her husband, and E.H. McMasters, the funeral being held there Sunday from the German Lutheran church of which she was a member.
Miss Molly Lundt was born in 1884 in Elkport, and was the youngest of a family of eight children. She was married to C.W. Bateman a little less than a year ago, coming then to West Union, where Mr. Bateman took charge of the Royal theater.
She is survived by her husband, mother, and brothers and sisters, her father having died four years ago. She will be sadly missed by her friends at her home as well as here, where she had been highly respected. Mr. Bateman will remain at Elkport for some time, his health being in such condition that he is unable to return.
