Elgin Echo, Thur., 26 March 1896. From the Elkader Argus, no date.

Elkader Argus: George Lusher (alias John Bramus), was arrested at Neelysville, Mo., and lodged in the jail at Elkader, by Sheriff Benton, on Tuesday of this week. The crime of which accused is the murder of Matheus Martzele (sic), on Sunday, June 9, 1895, on the farm of August Heiden Jr., in Cox Creek township, in this county. The two men were Austrian's, and lived neighbors in the old country. They were working together here grubbing, and boarding themselves. Death resulted from a gun shot wound. Lusher escaped the vigilance of the officers at the time and not until about three weeks ago did Sheriff Benton locate his man. The prisoner could not have chosen a safer place to avoid detection, as he was in a broken timbered section of the country in one of the South East counties of Missouri and about three miles from the Arkansas line, also in close proximity to the state line of Tenn. He was in the employ of a large lumber company, at work in a sawmill. Sheriff Benton is entitled to great credit for the manner in which he has traced this man to this out of the way place and for the capture and lodgement in our county jail. A preliminary examination was held on the 18th, before Justice Wolf, and the prisoner was bound over to await the action of the Grand Jury at the April term of court.

George Luescher, whom Sheriff Benton arrested in Missouri several weeks ago, and brought back to Clayton county, plead guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to eight years in the penitentiary in Anamosa.

Note: See the Clayton County Death Records, Book I, 1880 - 1897 on the Clayton co. IAGenWeb site. Mathias' surname is given as Watzell in the volume index and in the record entry on pg 107. Researchers should verify his surname to determine whether it is correct in the newspaper or in the county records.
