Deceased Name: JOHN F. HEFEL JR.

John F. "Bud" Hefel Jr., 75, 1775 Palm Court, died at 6:47 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at The Finley Hospital, following a courageous battle with leukemia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

Mr. Hefel farmed in North Buena Vista until retiring in 1983.

He was born on March 24, 1923, in North Buena Vista, son of John and Rose (Bakula) Hefel Sr.

He married Florence Kloser on May 8, 1945; she died on Nov. 10, 1985. He then married Esther Link on Nov. 17, 1990.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Knights. He loved to fish, play euchre, travel and take pictures.

Surviving are his wife, Esther (Link) Hefel, of Dubuque; nine children, Lorna Paisley, of Joliet, Ill., Beverly (Bill) Rettenmeier and Connie (Vince) Kintzle, both of Balltown, Iowa, Punkie (Phil) Birkel and Brian (Dianne) Hefel, both of Sherrill, Iowa, and Dennis (Linda) Hefel, Trudy Hefel, Amy (Daryl) Eudaley and Shawn Roling, all of Dubuque; seven step-children, Gerald (Phyllis) Link, James (Linda) Link, David (Judy) Link, Joy (Mike) Behnke, Carol Link, Jean (Mark) Kohn, and Greg Link, all of Dubuque; 24 grandchildren, Rich and Jessica Paisley, Angie Breitbach, Joe, Jeff, Jim and Jay Hefel, Brenda, Brad, and Brett Rettenmeier, Jennifer, Jeff, and Jason Kintzle, Corey, Andrea, Travis and Amelia Birkel, Mitch, Lani, and Kayla Hefel, Candace and Kristin Eudaley, Christopher and Erica Roling; a brother, Matt (Stella) Hefel, of Holy Cross, Iowa; six sisters, Loretta Decker, Edith (Clarence) Gloeckner, and Josie Heiderscheit, all of Dubuque, Alvina (Cy) Gassman, of Dyersville, Iowa, Eleanor (Charles) Cook, of Sherrill, and Kay (Benny) Habel, of Buena Vista; 13 step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Milton Hefel; three sisters, Marie Gansemer, Edwina Schmitt and Arlene Hefel.

In lieu of flowers, A John F. "Bud" Hefel Memorial Fund has been established.
