Mavis R. Hyde

Mavis Rose (Frieden) Hyde, 77, of Edgewood, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, in the emergency room at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, after a long, courageous, and hard fought battle with multiple health problems, including cancer.

Visitation was Friday, May 31, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and one hour before services at the church. Funeral services were Saturday, June 1, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood, conducted by Pastor Mike Jackson. Interment was at Edgewood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Karl Ommen, Charlie Gaffney, Dennis Knutson, Tom Allyn, Les Carlson and Josh Grau. Honorary pallbearers were Gene Schultz, Dick Hood, Bob Kiesau and Don Sutter.

Mavis was born Jan. 16, 1936, on the family farm near Elgin, Iowa to Levi and Alta (Dennler) Frieden. She attended the Cheery Valley country school in Marion Township and graduated from the Elgin High School with the class of 1954.

Following graduation, Mavis worked as a nurse’s aide for several years at both the Decorah and Oelwein Hospitals.

On Sept. 3, 1958, Mavis was united in marriage to Bud Hyde at St. John’s Congregational Church in Garber, Iowa. They were the parents of one son, Mark.

Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Elkader for more than forty years, where she worked for several years as a receptionist for Dr. A. R. Powell. Mavis then opened a daycare center in their home, caring for many children in their small mobile home.

When Bud retired from the Clerk of Court’s Office, they moved to Edgewood where they were and still are associated with the Leonard-Muller Funeral Homes. Mavis had been looking forward to the day when she could get back to working visitations, but that was not to happen.

Mavis could always find something that needed cleaning. Everything had to be spotless and in its proper place. She enjoyed her number-fill-in-puzzles, but her family was her highest priority.

Mavis is survived by her husband of almost fifty-five years, Bud Hyde of Edgewood; her son, Mark (Linda) Hyde of Dubuque; two step-granddaughters, Allison (fiancé Brennen Smith) Eaton of Fon du Lac, Wis., and Dana Eaton of Dubuque; one sister, LeAnna Olson of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Roger (Sharnel) Frieden of Elgin, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Frieden of Monona and LaDena Mendenhall of Monet, Mo.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Alta Frieden; two brothers, Raymond and Loren Frieden; and two sisters, Eileen Schori and one who died in infancy.
