Vernon Wilker

Vernon Wilker, 87, of Garnavillo, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the Elkader Care Center.

Visitation was Tuesday, April 23, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Garnavillo, and one hour before services at the church. Funeral services were Wednesday, April 24, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Hillary Burns-Kite.
Interment was at the Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Vernon was born on Feb. 11, 1926, in Volga to William and Rosena (Lenth) Wilker.

Vernon spent his early years in the Volga area where he received his education. Vernon started working on the farm as a young boy and never gave that up.

On Feb. 16, 1947, Vernon was united in marriage with Evelyn Stannard at St. Sebald in Strawberry Point. Together they farmed and raised a family of four boys. Vernon farmed his entire life but while doing so he also spent over 20 of those years working in feed sales. He also drove school bus for over 25 years for the Garnavillo area. Together Vernon and Evelyn enjoyed polka and dances associated with it as well as a good card game with friends. Vernon was an avid fisherman and a master gardener. He kept a garden of his own but he also worked in the Church Garden next to the cemetery. He was an early riser and took advantage of that time to work his garden and produce all kinds of food for his family, friends and his fellow church members. Those were the simple things in life that Vernon never took for granted.

Vernon is survived by his four sons, Jimmie (Joan) Wilker of Guttenberg, Kenneth (Karen) Wilker of Saint Olaf, David (Cindy) Wilker of Elkader and Terry (Betty) Wilker of West Salem, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Darlene Wilker; brother-in-law, Joseph Spielbauer and several other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; one sister, Delores Spielbauer and one brother, William Wilker.
