Postville Herald, Friday, 2 August 1918. In the Farmersburg column.

Matilda J. Layton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Chapman, was born in Coply, Ohio, August 19, 1841, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Matthews, in Farmersburg, Iowa, July 23, 1918. She was married to Joseph Layton in 1859 at Elkhart, Indiana. They lived a short time in Michigan, coming from there to Iowa over fifty years ago, where she has since resided. To this union were born four children, one dying in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. James Matthews of Farmersburg, Iowa; John D. Layton of Crookston, Minn.; Dr. J. W. Layton of Atchison, Kansas; also 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers are living in Elgin, Iowa, Curtis L. and Adelbert B. Chapman. One brother was killed in Chicamaugua during the Civil War. Her husband and three brothers served in the Civil War, her husband dying in 1869 from the result of exposure in service. At the present time there are four grandsons in the U.S. Army.

During the past few years she has made her home with her daughter. Mrs. Layton had an active mind and was always enthusiastic in what she undertook. She was humorous or sarcastic at pleasure. Always ready to help others, a kind mother, a faithful friend. She was patriotic, and since the entry of the U.S. into the present war has worked incessantly in its interest. She organized the Farmersburg branch of the Red Cross and was chairman of it at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Relief Corps, and virtually spent her entire time in working for the boys with the colors.

She was laid to rest in the Illyria cemetery beside her husband on the 25th of July, Rev. J. B. Bird officiating.
